Basil Smash
EASY | CITRUS | VEGAN
Its alluring neon-green tint might draw you in, but it's the fresh aromatic kick that will have you coming back time and again
The Basil Smash was conceived by Jörg Meyer of the Lion in Hamburg in 2008. The drink quickly became a smash hit (pun intended), even winning “Best New Cocktail” at the 2008 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards
Basil, despite all its bold and pungent flavour actually allows for so much nuance to come through in the end cocktail.
Ingredients
- 60 ml Banks Citron
- 5ml Yuzu
- 25 ml Fresh lemon juice
- 15 ml Sugar Syrup
- 1 Bunch Basil leaves
Recipe
- Place basil and lemon into a cocktail shaker. Gently muddle the lemon and basil “smashing” the ingredients. Add sugar syrup and Banks and top up with ice.
- Shake vigorously. Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.
- Garnish with basil leaves.
- Serve & Enjoy
Tip
If you don't muddle the basil you’ll have a fresher-tasting drink. It’s subjective as to whether this makes it better or not as the flavours are different and often less intense, but worth trying it out for yourself to find out!

Mix Notes
When mixing drinks with a non-alcoholic spirit such as Banks we want to reduce time that Banks mixes with Ice before the drink is served.
This is because the flavours are water soluble so as the ice melts it dilutes the flavours. It is suggested to always dry mix ingredients in a shaker before pouring over ice or adding ice to the shaker.
